AVLI was organized to address a critical deficiency in the availability of Auditory-Verbal Therapy around the world. The statistics are startling:
- Each day 33 babies in the United States are born profoundly deaf with another 2-3 out of 1,000 born with partial hearing loss. That's over 12,000 babies born each year with some form of hearing loss in the U.S. alone - globally the figure is much higher.
- There are currently fewer that 250 certified Auditory-Verbal Therapists worldwide.
And yet, Auditory-Verbal Therapy offers infants and children who are hearing impaired the most promising path to living truly independent lives in a hearing and speaking world. It teaches the deaf and hard of hearing how to listen and speak using high-powered hearing aids or Cochlear implants.
AVLI's mission is to close the gap between the number of children needing Auditory-Verbal Therapy and the number of therapists qualified to offer therapy services. We believe every person who needs Auditory-Verbal Therapy should have access to it - conveniently and affordably.
Our organization began as the continuing education arm of The Bolesta Center, Inc., one of a handful of not-for-profit agencies devoted to teaching and promoting Auditory-Verbal Therapy. The need for AVLI was identified during The Bolesta Center's participation in the Denali Initiative, a program dedicated to accelerating and maximizing the effectiveness of social entrepreneurs. Both AVLI and The Bolesta Center are based in the United States in Tampa, Florida.

The Denali Initiative
Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Denali Initiative is a unique collaboration between the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and several foundations inspired by the social enterprise achievements of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and its founder, William E. Strickland, Jr. The program is dedicated to developing the next generation of social entrepreneurs from small to mid-size, community-based, not-for-profit organizations across the nation.
Through the creation of a premier educational curriculum, as well as use of peer support and technical assistance, the Denali Initiative attracts executives from all program areas in the social sector and improves the quality of service provided to communities. The Denali Initiative's mission is to improve the quality of life in our communities and promote a standard of excellence in the social sector by:
- Identifying leaders with demonstrated entrepreneurial potential and high ethical standards.
- Accelerating and maximizing the effectiveness of these leaders through a rigorous social enterprise development program.
The Denali Initiative is an intense, action-oriented training and learning process that engages both participants and their organizations in a developmental process. The fellowship experience is grounded in a major entrepreneurial project created by each Fellow in consultation with his or her advisory board. The ultimate goal for Fellows is to use their projects to achieve a positive, measurable, impact in their communities in a cost-effective way. The goal is to create a close-knit, action-oriented, learning community composed of the most talented new social entrepreneurs in the country.

The Bolesta Center, Inc.
The Bolesta Center is one of twelve independently operating not-for-profit centers in the United States dedicated to Auditory-Verbal principles and practices. Its mission is to enable children who are deaf and hard of hearing to hear, listen, and speak in order to live independent lives in mainstream society. This is accomplished through the Auditory-Verbal Approach, which is based upon principles that are parent-focused and child-driven. Through Auditory-Verbal Therapy, children learn to listen using modern hearing aids or cochlear implants. The Bolesta Center also provides professional internship training, programs for persons who acquire hearing loss, and community education for the entire population.
AVLI is governed by The Bolesta Center's Board of Directors and is an integral part of helping The Bolesta Center fulfill its mission of social entrepreneurship and enterprise.
